Designers Today : Norm Architects

“ The simpler you do it, the more important the detail becomes. ”

Norm Architects is a multidisciplinary design studio focusing on residential architecture, commercial interiors, industrial design, photography, graphics and art direction. Norm Architects were recently named Danish designers of the year, and have impressed worldwide with their soft minimalism furniture, lighting and accessories designed for companies such as Menu, Design Within Reach and many more.

The studio was founded in 2008 by architects Kasper Rønn and Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen by their vocation to create timeless architecture and meaningful design products. Born in 1976, Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn first met in high school before going on to graduate as architects from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Recently, Norm Architects joined Linda Korndal.

The name Norm indicates the importance of drawing inspiration from traditions and norms that have been refined for many centuries within the field of architecture and aesthetics. Norm makes it a virtue to focus on quality, durability and timelessness. To find the simplest shape for a given task without forgetting the beauty of the shape and the details, in order to reach a point where there is nothing to add and nothing to take away that can make the product better. Like true scandinavians they pride themselves in their culture and history, and hope and aspire to create new norms for nordic design.

“Our home and the things we surround ourselves with, should provide a refuge from the daily chaos, which seems to dominate our world. By understanding minimalism as an aesthetic, and simplicity as a philosophy of life, NORM aims at providing structures which gives a feeling of freedom. The justification of a product lies in its ability to differentiate; aesthetically and in functionality. With a determined focus on the good idea, right materials and fine craftsmanship, Norm Architects primary endeavour is to create useful products, appealing design, and architecture that captures and inspire life.”

Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen focuses on shape and tactility. Kasper Rønn concentrates on technology and inventions. Together they are Norm Architects, founded with the aim of blending their complementary interests to produce furniture and architecture in keeping with the Scandinavian “norms” of simplicity, gracefulness, craftsmanship and timelessness.

“Kasper is very much into the technical part of it, and I am very much into the aesthetical part of it,” says Bjerre-Poulsen. “But in reality, we assist each other in all aspects of the design process.” They also share a passion for finding that exact point where nothing can be added or taken away to make a product better.

” Details are not only details; they make the product. “
